Capacitance refers to the charge storage under a given potential difference. It is widely used in power filter, signal filter, signal coupling, resonance, DC isolation and other circuits. It is an indispensable electronic component in the field of electronics and power.

In circuit design, there is a common understanding that "when the margin design of devices is uncertain, the margin will be as large as possible and reliable". In fact, this view is wrong. For the safety capacitor, too much withstand voltage margin will also lead to a failure, which is called "low voltage failure".

The mechanism of low voltage failure is the existence of dielectric leakage current. In case of high humidity, moisture will seep into the capacitor due to its unsealing. When voltage is applied to the two poles of the capacitor, leakage current will be formed on the surface of the infiltrated moisture due to its conductivity. Excessive leakage current will greatly reduce the energy storage characteristics of the capacitor, which will result in the loss of the characteristics of the capacitor. This phenomenon is most likely to occur during power on operation after humidity storage test.

Experts in the industry said that the selection of high-quality connectors is the key to maintain a good power storage effect, smooth flow and not easy to be damaged by current. When alternating current passes through a capacitor, its direction changes repeatedly, and its size also changes regularly. The capacitor is connected to the AC power supply. The capacitor is charged and discharged continuously, and the circuit will flow the charging current and discharge current that are consistent with the AC power change law (different phases). Precautions for capacitor installation

a. The used capacitor cannot be used again, but it can be disassembled for periodic inspection to test the electrical performance;

b. If the capacitor has been charged, discharge it with a resistance of about 1k Ω before use;

c. If the capacitor is stored at more than 35 ℃ and the humidity is more than 70%, its leakage current may rise. Before use, apply the rated voltage through a resistance of about 1k Ω;

d. Confirm the rated capacity, voltage and polarity of the capacitor before installation;

E. Capacitors falling on the ground shall not be used;

f. Do not use deformed capacitors;

G. The spacing between the positive and negative leads of the capacitor shall be consistent with the position of the PCB welding hole. If the capacitor is forcibly inserted into the circuit board with mismatched hole spacing, there will be stress on the outgoing line, which will lead to capacitor short circuit or leakage current rise;

h. During installation, insert the capacitor pin or soldering pin into the PCB until the bottom of the capacitor sticks to the surface of the PCB;

i. Do not apply more than the specified mechanical pressure. When the tension is applied to the outgoing line of the capacitor, the tension will act on the internal part of the capacitor, which will cause internal short circuit, open circuit or leakage current rise of the capacitor. Solder the capacitor to the circuit board without shaking the capacitor strongly.
